AMHERST, Mass. - A five-goal first period helped carry No. 4/5 Boston College past University of Massachusetts hockey, 8-0 on Friday night at the Mullins Center. The setback leaves the Minutemen at 7-13-4 overall, 2-8-4 in Hockey East, while the Eagles improve to 16-4-3 on the season and 9-1-3 in league action.
Boston College opened the scoring 4:49 into the first with a slap shot from the point by Ian McCoshen that found its way through traffic. Josh Couturier and Teddy Doherty picked up assists on the play.
The Eagles added a second tally at the 7:59 mark with a wrister from the right faceoff circle by Alex Tuch off a feed from Steve Santini and Zach Sanford.
Then, over a span of three minutes, 41 seconds, the Eagles put the contest out of reach with goals from Chris Calnan, Colin White and Miles Wood.
Boston College’s special teams added two more at 2:28 and 11:38 of the second period, a shorthander by Austin Cangelosi and a power-play goal from Doherty.
Ryan Fitzgerald later capped off the scoring 17:27 into the second on a redirection from Michael Kim.
The Eagles finished with a 38-20 shot advantage and went 1-for-2 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-4. Freshman Nic Renyard made 30 saves for the Minutemen and Thatcher Demko stopped 20 en route to the shutout.
UMass will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 23, when the Minutemen will play host to Vermont at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
