December 07, 2015 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts hockey freshman defenseman William Lagesson has been named to Sweden’s preliminary roster for the upcoming 2016 World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland. Lagesson, who played for Sweden at World Juniors in 2015, is the first Minuteman to be invited to compete for his country in the tournament since Stephen Werner ’06 was a member of Team USA in 2004.
Lagesson has previously dressed for Team Sweden in 65 international contests between the U16, U17, U18 and U20 levels. Last year at the World Junior Championship he helped Sweden to a 4-0 record in the preliminary round and an appearance in the Bronze Medal game. In 2013, Lagesson was a part of the Gold Medal-winning Team Sweden at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Thus far in his career with the Minutemen, Lagesson, a 2014 fourth round NHL Draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers (91st overall), has appeared in all 17 games and is tied for the team lead in defensemen scoring with six points on two goals and four assists. He is tied for fourth on the squad in blocks, as well.
