November 21, 2015 | Hockey
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Massachusetts and #13 Merrimack traded goals in the second period for the only scoring of the night as the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Lawler Rink on Saturday. Following the tie, the Minutemen are now 6-3-4 on the season, 2-3-4 in Hockey East, while the Warriors are now 6-1-4 overall and 2-1-4 in league play.
Merrimack appeared to have opened the scoring in the first period, but a puck that rolled off Nic Renyard’s back on a shot from behind the net was ruled to have not crossed the goal line, keeping things knotted at 0-0 heading into the intermission.
UMass then broke the deadlock just 1:19 into the second. Joseph Widmar sent a pass up the wall to Jake Horton at the right point that was redirected past Collin Delia on the way to the net by freshman Kurt Keats for his second tally of the weekend.
It looked as if the Minutemen would take a 2-0 lead at the 11:34 mark as sophomore William Lagesson drove down the slot and tucked one behind Delia, but the goal was disallowed for contact with the goaltender.
Less than a minute later, Merrimack came up with the equalizer. Aaron Titcomb threw a backhander towards the net as he crossed the slot to beat Renyard through traffic. Brett Seney collected an assist on the play.
The sides traded opportunities in the third and in overtime, but both goaltenders remained perfect the rest of the way. Renyard finished with 30 saves for UMass, while Delia turned aside 22 shots for the Warriors.
Merrimack ended the night with a 31-23 shot advantage and went 0-3 on the power play , while the Minutemen were 0-for-4.
The UMass will be back in action next Fri., Nov. 27, when the squad will play host to #3/2 Quinnipiac at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
