Massachusetts Rallies for 3-3 Tie at Vermont
November 15, 2015 | Hockey
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior Ray Pigozzi scored the game-tying goal with 40 seconds to play in the third period, helping Massachusetts hockey complete a comeback from a 3-0 deficit to tie Vermont 3-3 on Sunday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The tie moves the Minutemen to 6-3-2 on the season, 2-2-2 in Hockey East, while the Catamounts are now 2-2-2 in league action and 3-6-2 overall.
Pigozzi, with a goal and an assist, logged his second multi-point game of the season and ninth of his career as he now has at least one point in 10 of UMass' 11 games on the year with a 5-7-12 line. Sophomore Patrick Lee netted his first tally of the year and second of his career on the power play, while Dennis Kravchenko collected his team-leading 10th assist of the season for his 50th career point.
Vermont's first of the contest came off a rebound from a Yvan Pattyn shot from the point. Jonathan Turk cleaned up the loose puck 14:07 into the opening period.
The Catamounts then pushed their advantage to 2-0 late in the stanza. Pattyn found Brian Bowen streaking down the slot for the score at the 18:27 mark. Jarrid Privitera earned an assist on the play, as well.
Vermont's lead grew to 3-0 just 23 ticks into the second period as Alexx Privitera's slap shot at the blue line from Anthony Petruzzelli found its way past Nic Renyard.
UMass began to chip away at the deficit with its second power play opportunity of the day coming 5:58 into the third period. Lee converted for the Minutemen on the man advantage from the slot off a feed from sophomore Dominic Trento and Pigozzi at 6:25.
At the 15:14 mark, UMass made it a one-goal game as Laggeson's strike from the left point deflected off a UVM player on its way to the net. Kravchenko and freshman Austin Plevy earned assists on the tally.
With Renyard pulled for an extra attacker, the Minutemen forced overtime with 40 seconds to go in regulation. Amidst a scramble in front of the Vermont net, Pigozzi knocked the puck home from junior Steven Iacobellis and senior Ben Gallacher for the game-tying goal.
The Catamounts out-shot UMass 44-37 in the contest, while the Minutemen went 1-for-2 on the power-play and UVM was 0-for-3. Each squad won 32 faceoffs on the afternoon with Iacobellis (12-for-20, 60%) and Kravchenko (10-for-18, 55.6%) leading the way for UMass. Renyard finished with 41 saves for the Minutemen and Mike Santaguida turned aside 34 UMass shots for the Catamounts.
The Mintutemen will be back in action next Friday, Nov. 20, when the squad will travel to New Hampshire for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Wildcats.
