SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Massachusetts men's soccer team was held scoreless for the first time this season, falling 2-0 against Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium Friday.

The Minutemen (0-3) dropped their third-consecutive game to begin the season, while the Broncos (2-1) won their home opener in a facility that has seen them compile a .700 winning pct. over the past 26 years.

UMass was outshot 15-6, but allowed just four on goal with its best defensive effort of the young season.

SCU got on the board late in the first half when Carlos Delgadillo dribbled into the box along the right end line and passed the ball in front of the goal where Edson Cardona connected with a one-timer for the score.

The Broncos added to their lead right off the opening kick of the second half, scoring 12 seconds into the stanza. Delgadillo slipped between a pair of UMass defenders and scored from just inside the 18-yard box on a ball to the far post and past UMass goalkeeper Ryan Buckingham.

UMass had a number of good scoring chances in the second half, including twice in the final few minutes but both times were turned away.

A total of five players registered shots for UMass, led by junior Mark Morris' two. Buckingham made two saves in the game.

The Minutemen will conclude their four-game swing through the West Coast on Sunday when they face Cal Poly (2-1) in San Luis Obispo. Kickoff at Alex Spanos Stadium is set for 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
