Box Score

OREM, Utah - The Massachusetts men's soccer program allowed four unanswered goals and was unable to match the intensity of Utah Valley, who was playing its first-ever men's soccer game, falling 5-1 at Clyde Field Saturday.

UMass (0-1) took 16 shots and secured six corner kick opportunities but was beaten to loose balls that resulted in strong chances for the home team.

UVU (1-0) opened the game with a goal in the sixth minute, when Karson Payton scored from 15 yards out.

The Minutemen bounced back and tied the game about six minutes later at the 12:02 mark. Luke Pavone sent a cross fro the left side that Mark Morris headed in from 10 yards out for his first score of the year.

The Wolverines took the lead for good when the Minutemen were unable to clear a saved ball out of the goal box. Matt Gay sent a hard free kick from 40 yards out that goalkeeper Taylor Culp blocked but didn't corral the loose ball. David Adams charged in and shot it past Culp early in the 28th minute.

UVU made it a 3-1 game six minutes later with some crop passing in the box. Paul Hoffmeister and Thomas Loomis played a give-and-go almost onto the end line where Hoffmeister flipped a pass in traffic away from the line and to Austin Buxton who one-timed it past Kahn for the score.

It appeared the margin would be two goals at the half but a UMass turnover at midfield led to a UVU score. Buxton dribbled into the box and sent a touch pass to Lucas Cawley who tucked a low, bouncer into the left post for his first score of the year.

Matt Gay scored the final goal of the night at the 61:11 mark.

Josh Schwartz led UMass with six shots, while Peter Alvarenga, Josh Jess and Mark Morris had two each.

Culp, who was making his first start after redshirting in 2013, finished with five saves.

UMass will travel to the Golden State and face San Jose State on Tuesday night. Kickoff at Spartan Soccer Field is set for 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
