AMHERST, Mass. - Four former Minutemen, three as players and one as a head coach, are deep into postseason action in the NHL, AHL and ECHL. UMass' Jonathan Quick has led the Los Angeles Kings back to the Western Conference Finals for a third straight season. Rookie Conor Sheary has been a difference maker for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in their Eastern Conference Semifinal series against the Providence Bruins in the AHL's Calder Cup Playoffs, while head coach Dean Stork and defenseman Michael Marcou will open up their Eastern Conference Finals of the ECHL's Kelly Cup Playoffs tonight in Cincinnati.
Quick was instrumental in helping the Kings return to the Western Conference Finals for the third straight year for the first time in franchise history. He stopped 46 of the 49 shots (.939 pct.) he faced over Games 6 & 7 against Anaheim to stave off elimination.
After playing in just two regular season games since signing with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton back in March, Sheary has provided an offensive spark for the Penguins in the postseason with seven points (3g, 4a) in seven games, incuding the last four straight in the squad's Eastern Conference Semifinal series against Providence. In his postseason debut, Sheary assisted on the overtime game winner against the Binghamton Senators. His three-point night in Game 3 at Providence helped the Penguins erase a three-goal defiict in the third period. Sheary's goal 14:09 into the third tied the score at 4-4 to force overtime in a game that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would go on to win, 5-4.
Dean Stork has guided the Greenville Road Warriors to their first-ever appearance in the Conference Finals. Marcou has played in all 12 postseason contests thus far for Greenville, tallying four points on one goal and three assists and is +7.
