UMass Hockey Falls To Notre Dame, 4-0

AMHERST, Mass. - Notre Dame scored three in the second and added a 5-on-3 power-play goal in the third to hand UMass hockey a 4-0 setback at the Mullins Center on Saturday night. Following the loss, the Minutemen sit at 4-11-0 overall, 1-9-0 in Hockey East, while the Fighting Irish improve to 8-8-2 overall, 4-2-2 in league play.
After a defensive-minded first period, Notre Dame erupted for three goals over a six-minute, 19-second span early in the second. Robbie Russo began the flurry, blasting home a one-timer from the left faceoff circle 2:08 into the stanza from Sam Herr and Jordan Gross.
Austin Wuthrich made it 2-0 in favor of the Irish at the 7:54 mark, batting a puck in mid-air, off a feed from Vince Hinostrosa and Gross.
Notre Dame pushed its lead to three just 33 seconds later. Wuthrich and Hinostroza found Mario Lucia for a tap-in at the back post.
The Irish added their fourth and final tally of the evening at the 17:07 mark of the third period with Russo recording his second of the night with the 5-on-3 advantage from Hinostroza and Lucia. Notre Dame finished 1-for-10 on the power play in the contest, while UMass was 0-for-3.
Minuteman senior netminder Steve Mastalerz totaled 29 saves for UMass as the squad was out-shot, 33-14. Cal Peterson made 14 stops and collected the shutout.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 16, when the squad will play host to Northeastern in a non-league matchup at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
