BURLINGTON, Vt. - Despite outshooting Vermont, 39-34, the UMass hockey team was unable to solve goaltender Mike Santaguida, falling 2-0 at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The setback leaves the Minutemen at 3-9-2 on the year, 1-6-2 in Hockey East, while the Catamounts improve to 5-5-1 overall and 4-4-0 in league play.

With a quick moving first period nearing its conclusion, Vermont took a 1-0 lead at the 18:22 mark. Chris McCarthy caused a UMass turnover in the neutral zone and tapped the puck over to Jake Fallon. Fallon skated into Minutemen territory and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Steve Mastalerz for his second of the season.

The Catamounts increased their advantage to 2-0, 11:11 into the third. Mario Puskarich buried a rebound off a shot from McCarthy at the point on the power play. Michael Paliotta earned an assist, as well.

Redshirt junior Troy Power had one of UMass' best chances of the contest late in the third, but his attempt to redirect the puck was denied by Santaguida. The UVM netminder later came up with another big stop, turning aside a shot by freshman Ray Pigozzi on an odd-man rush with 12:40 left in the third.

The Minutemen were 0-for-2 on the power play in the contest, while the Catmounts were 1-for-4. UMass won 32-of-62 faceoffs on the afternoon.

Mastalerz finished with 32 saves for the Minutemen and Santaguida had 39 stops for Vermont.

UMass will next travel to #4 Quinnipiac on Saturday, Nov. 30, for a 7:00 p.m. game that will be broadcast on SportsNet New York.
