#5 UMass Suffers First Loss, 9-8 At Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. - After falling behind 6-2 in the first half, No. 5 UMass rallied to within one goal on two occasions, but were unable to get over the hump and suffered its first loss of the season, 9-8 at Albany. Joe Resetarits scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Great Danes (2-1). The Minutemen are now 4-1 and have a week off before traveling to Providence next Tuesday.
Resetarits scored with 10:59 and 7:38 left in the fourth to give the Danes back a two-goal lead after Connor Mooney's second tally of the game had brought UMass to within one with 10:04 left in the fourth at 8-7.
Ryan Hantverk netted his second of the game with 30.2 second left to cut the deficit to one at 9-8. Greg Rushing won the ensuing face-off but Albany's goalie Edmund Cathers made his 14th and final save on a shot by Mike Fetterly with just seconds remaining.
UMass outshot Albany, 47-28 for the game including 33-9 in the second half and 20-2 in the fourth quarter.
Manny had three assists for UMass.
Down by four at halftime, UMass ripped off four of the game's five goals in the third quarter to draw within one at 7-6 after 45 minutes. Mooney, Ryan Hantverk, Kyle Smith and Art Kell netted third-quarter goals in the span of less than seven minutes. UMass was able to develop some pace in the third quarter, outshooting Albany 13-7 in the period. Freshman face-off man Joe Cavello keyed the third-quarter rally with several face-off wins.
Albany dominated possession and the scoreboard in the first half, holding a 6-2 lead at halftime. The Great Danes scored three of the four goals in each quarter. UMass' one offense came on a pair of man-up goals by Art Kell and Will Manny.
Matt Johnson scored two goals in the final four minutes of the first half including one with 12 seconds left in the first half, for the four-goal bulge at intermission.
The Great Danes have won four straight games against the Minutemen in Albany, dating to UMass' last win on enemy territory in 2003. The tight series has featured six of the last eight games decided by just one goal. The win for Albany marked its highest over a ranked team with UMass at No. 5.
UMass will have a week off until the Minutemen play at Providence next Tuesday at 4 p.m.
