Harvard Rallies To Beat #14 UMass, 11-9

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Dean Gibbons scored with 2:30 left in the fourth quarter to cap Harvard's 11-9 comeback win over No. 14 UMass at a frigid Harvard Stadium on Tuesday night. Harvard (6-2) scored five goals in a row bridging the third and fourth quarters to rally from an 8-4 deficit. Gibbons had given Harvard its first lead of the game with 8:19 left in the fourth. UMass (5-3 overall) tied the game on a Ryan Hantverk goal with 4:57 left to tie the game at 9-9.
Harvard came back from an 8-4 deficit in the third quarter as the Crimson scored the final four goals of the third quarter to tie the game at 8-8. Ryan Stevens' tally with 1:13 deadlocked the game and finished a four-goal spurt n 3:58.
Gibbons had three goals as did Jeff Cohen for the Crimson. Terry White added a pair as Harvard scored seven of the game's final eight goals.
UMass took the 8-4 lead with goal from seven different scorers. Manny's unassisted goal game the Minutemen their largest lead of the game with 5:39 left in third.
Art Kell had two goals for UMass. The other seven tallies came from Anthony Biscardi, Will Manny, Mike Fetterly, Hantverk, Colin Fleming, Steve D'Amario and Kyle Smith.
Tim McCormack made 17 saves. Harry Krieger had 19 stops for the Crimson.
UMass suffered its first loss at Harvard since 1983, as the Minutemen had won 13 games in a row on thew road in the series. UMass had won 19 of the last 20 meetings in Cambridge, prior to this loss.
Harvard outshot the Minutemen 16-5 in the fourth quarter to outshoot the Minutemen 37-35 in the game.
UMass returns to CAA action on Saturday as the Minutemen travel to Philadelphia for the first-ever meeting with Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m.
