ALEXANDRIA, Va. - The UMass baseball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the squad dropped the final game of its weekend series at George Washington, 10-5 at Barcroft Park. Taking the series, 2-1, the Minutemen are now 6-9 overall, 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Colonials move to 7-17 on the year, 1-2 in the conference.
George Washington took an early 2-0 lead as the squad plated a pair of runs in its first turn at bat. Justin Albright reached on a fielder's choice, followed by a walk to Owen Beightol. Stephen Oswald then sent a single up the middle to bring in Albright and Beightol came home on a single through the right side by Tyler McCarthy.
In the top of the second, UMass pulled level with the Colonials. Peter Copa started off the frame with a single to left, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Anthony Serino. Freshman Josh Messier plated senior Kyle Multner with a single up the middle to even the score at 2-2.
However, George Washington took the runs right back in the bottom half of the frame. Brendon Kelliher reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Beightol. Oswald knocked in Beightol with a double to left center to push the lead to 4-2.
The Colonials went on to score for a third straight inning as Jimmy Best led off with a single down the right field line and crossed the plate on a error with two away.
In the top of the fourth, the Minutemen continued the scoring by pulling to within one of George Washington. Multner ripped a double to left and junior Tom Conley drew a walk. After Serino advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Messier picked up the RBIs with a double down the left field line.
With two away in their next turn at bat, the Colonials added a sixth run to bring the score to 6-4. Oswald doubled to right center and came around to score on a single to center by McCarthy.
UMass cut its deficit to 6-5, in the fifth. Senior Matt Gedman singled to right to lead off the inning and was driven in by Multner with a single up the middle.
That would be as close as the Minutemen would come, however, as George Washington tacked on an insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and two in the eighth on a home run by McCarthy.
Sophomore Dennis Torres started and took the loss (1-2) for UMass, letting up four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings with three walks and one strikeout.
Messier had three of the Minutemen's 10 hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and a season-best three RBI. Multner hit 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored twice, while Gedman batted 3-for-4 with a run scored.
McCarthy led the charge for GW, with five RBI and a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Oswald finished 4-for-4 in the contest with two RBI and two runs scored.
UMass will be back in action on Tuesday, Mar 29, when the squad travels to Worcester, Mass., to face Holy Cross at 3 p.m.
