AMHERST, Mass. - UMass freshman goalie Kevin Boyle has been named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week and the UMass Athlete of the Week as announced on Monday. Boyle was a key part in the Mass Attack's 3-1 win over No. 17 Yale last Wednesday.
As the UMass Athlete of the Week, Boyle will be honored as the Wednesday UMass Sports Luncheon which begins at 12:00 PM in Room 1009 of the Campus Center.
Boyle stopped 26-of-27 shots including 11-of-11 in the third period. The Manalapan, N.J., native also helped the penalty kill unit go 5-for-6 in the game stopping a pair of power plays in the first period and all three Yale extra-man advantages in the third period.
Five of his 11 third period saves were in the final 10 minutes of play including a 4-save effort on a Yale power play.
The win marked his second career win over a ranked team as he also was key in UMass' 4-2 win over No. 1 Boston College earlier this season.
For the season, Boyle has posted a 2.99 goals-against-average and an .897 save percentage with a 4-2-3 overall record.
In Hockey East, he is the league's only freshman ranked in the top-10 among individual goalies. He ranks 7th in both goals-against-average and save percentage and is fourth overall in win percentage (.611).
UMass concluded the first half of the season with a 5-7-4 overall record and a 2-6-3 mark in Hockey East (9th place). The Minutemen will return to action on Dec. 29-30 as UMass heads to the Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla. UMass will face Cornell on Thursday night and either Clarkson or Maine on Friday.
