BURLINGTON, Vt. - Kyle Reynolds scored a pair of goals for Vermont to lead the Catamounts to a 2-1 win over the UMass hockey team on Tuesday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. T.J. Syner scored with under three minutes left in the second and UMass had nearly 75 seconds with the extra skater to end the game, but could not find the equalizer. UMass will face Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon on NESN.
After Syner scored just before the second intermission to make it a 2-1 game, both teams searched for a decisive goal in the third period. It looked as if Vermont (2-7-1, 1-6-1 HEA) had notched its third goal of the game with 6:49 left in the game, but it was overturned after review.
Following that review, UMass (4-6-3, 2-6-3 HEA) earned a power play but could not convert at the midway point of the period.
UMass continued to pressure Vermont goalie Rob Madore including the final 75 seconds with the extra skater, but could not find the game-tying goal.
Vermont jumped on the scoreboard first when Reynolds wristed a shot from the right faceoff dot over Teglia's should into the upper right corner of the goal with 8:21 left in the opening period. UMass outshot the Catamounts 6-to-3 with each team going 0-for-1 on the power play.
The Catamounts made it a 2-0 game with 11:50 left in the 2nd period as Reynolds scored his second goal of the game on a power play.
Syner cut the lead to 2-1 when he was able to break through two Vermont defenders on a stretch pass from Conor Sheary flipping the puck past Madore with 2:23 left in the second period.
Vermont finished the game outshooting UMass 22-to-19 and was 1-for-5 on the power play, while holding UMass to 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
UMass returns to action on Saturday when the Minutemen head to Quinnipiac for a 3:30 opening faceoff. The game will be televised live on NESN.
