2010 Men's Lax Awards Handed Out

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's lacrosse team held its 2010 Team Banquet on Saturday as Head Coach Greg Cannella handed out the team's honors for the past season. Senior All-American Diogo Godoi was named the Defensive MVP while junior-to-be Anthony Biscardi was named the Offensive MVP. Senior Ryan Smith collected the Goose Garber Award for the team's Unsung hero.
Here is a rundown of the 2010 award winners.
Offensive MVP - Anthony Biscardi
Named to CAA Second-Team midfielder ... Started 10 games in first midfield before starting on attack for last three games to start final 13 ... Second on team with 35 points and tied for second in goals with 21. Also second on team in assists with 14 ... Points in 12 of 14 games this season.
Defensive MVP - Diogo Godoi
2010 TEWAARATON TROPHY CANDIDATE ... 2010 USILA THIRD-TEAM ALL-AMERICA ... 2010 NORTH-SOUTH ALL-STAR ... 2010 FIRST TEAM ALL-NEW ENGLAND ... 2010 CAA FIRST-TEAM DEFENSEMAN ... Started all 14 games; has 24 groundballs and 22 caused turnovers -- second on team and third in CAA, 20th in NCAA.
Most Improved - Tom Celentani
Was starting close defenseman in second year in program ... Ranked 14th in NCAA with team-leading 25 caused turnovers (1.8 per game) with 31 groundballs in 14 starts ... Tied with for No. 1 in CAA in caused turnovers (1.8 per game) ... Forced the game-sealing turnover to clinch win vs. #10 Georgetown (4/24). Also had first-career assist in the win.
Robin Food Award (Most Assists) - Will Manny
Named to Inside Lacrosse All-Freshman Team ... Inside Lacrosse's No. 2 Rookie in the 2010 Season ... CAA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ... Freshman sensation led team in points (45), goals (27). and assists (18) ... Shot 38 percent (27-of-72), sixth in the CAA ... Was sixth in the CAA in points (3.21), eighth in goals (1.93) and fifth in assists (1.29) per game ... 23rd in NCAA in points per game and 38th in assists ... Had points in all 14 games, with at least two points in first 13 games ... Had three or more points in 10 of 14 games and four or more points in six games ... Had five hat tricks on the season.
Eric Sopracasa Heart and Soul Award - Bobby Hayes
2010 ESPN MAGAZINE Academic All-American Nominee ... 2010 NORTH-SOUTH ALL-STAR ... 2010 FIRST TEAM ALL-NEW ENGLAND ... 2010 ALL-CAA SECOND TEAM MIDFIELDER ... 2010 TEAM CAPTAIN ... Third on team in points (34) and fourth in goals (20). Tied for second on team in assists (14) ... Second to Kyle Smith for team with four man-up goals ... Points in all 14 games of senior season and 16 games in a row overall dating to 2009 ... 29 career multi-point games in 57 career contests.
Goose Garber Award(unsung hero) - Ryan Smith
2010 SENIOR CAPTAIN ... Started on first attack unit after playing just seven games in first three seasons at UMass ... Played all 14 games, started first 11 games, and scored four goals ... Great person who has overcome personal adversity.
