Lyons, O'Donnell Lead UMass Past Temple, 16-7

PHILADELPHIA - Jackie Lyons scored five goals and Jesse O'Donnell added three goals and three assists to lead the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 16-7 win at Temple on Saturday afternoon.
The Minutewomen improve to a perfect 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 and move to 6-6 overall. The win was also the eighth time this season where UMass has allowed 10-or-fewer goals in a game.
Lyons also added an assist in the game to tie with O'Donnell for the game's high score of six points. Merritt Cosgrove and Danielle Pelletier each added two goals, while Jordan Renna, Nina Sarcona, Riley Perry, and Stephanie Hopkins each added a tally. Sarcona also finished with a career-high three assists.
UMass outshot Temple (4-6, 1-2 A-10) by a 34-to-25 margin, including a commanding 21-to-12 edge in the first half. The Minutewomen also held the edge in draw controls (15-to-10) and were just one shy of the Owls in groundballs (13-to-14).
A quick start to the game gave the Minutewomen the advantage as UMass took a 6-1 lead in the first 15 minutes of play. Temple and UMass traded goals to end the first half giving the Minutewomen a 8-3 lead at halftime.
O'Donnell put UMass up 9-3 to open the second half, but Temple scored three consecutive goals, including one of Charlotte Swavola's three in the game, to cut the lead to 9-6 with 23:39 remaining.
Lyons scored her fourth goal of the game with just under 20 minutes to play and the Minutewomen accounted for six of the final seven goals scored cruising to the win.
Katie Florence made six saves in goal for UMass to take the win, while Temple's Jessica Colucci made 10 saves in the loss.
The Minutewomen have now won nine of their last 10 regular-season Atlantic 10 games and are 5-0 this season when scoring 10-or-more goals in a game.
O'Donnell and Lyons continue to share the UMass scoring lead with 32 points each. O'Donnell, who has scored a point in 13 consecutive games, has 28 goals and four assists, while Lyons has 23 goals and nine assists.
Lyons is now tied with Melynda Zwick (2005-08) for career assists with 40 and needs just six more points to move into UMass' all-time top-10 list. She currently has 116 points in 49 career games.
The Minutewomen will return to action next Friday at Duquesne in Pittsburgh (3 PM) before returning home after a six game road stand to face St. Bonaventure at McGuirk Stadium on Sunday (Noon).
