Duquesne Hands Lax First A-10 Loss, 12-10

PITTSBURGH - Meghan Frederick scored five goals and added five assists leading Duquesne to a 12-10 over the UMass women's lacrosse team at Rooney Field on Friday afternoon. The Dukes used a three-goal run to start the second half handing the Minutewomen their first Atlantic 10 loss of the season. Jackie Lyons led UMass with three goals and two assists. The Minutewomen will return to McGuirk Stadium on Sunday to host St. Bonaventure at Noon.
Kathleen McNish scored three goals and added three assists, while Katie Rekart tallied three goals to round out the Duquesne (7-7, 2-2 A-10) attack.
Jesse O'Donnell also scored three goals to lead the Minutewomen offensively.
Katie Florence took the loss in goal for UMass (6-7, 3-1 A-10) making eight saves on 29 shots. Sara Beckstead earned the win also making eight saves against 25 shots.
Duquesne took a 7-6 lead into halftime, but led by as many as three midway through the first half.
The Dukes started the second half with a three-goal run thanks to goals from a pair of goals from Frederick and one from McNish putting Duquesne up 10-6 with 21:40 left in the game.
After the two teams traded goals, Lyons scored a pair pulling the Minutewomen within two, 11-9, with 15:49 to play.
Both defenses tighted up from that point going nearly eight scoreless minutes after Lyons' last goal. Rekart scored at the 8:07 mark to push the lead back to three, 12-9.
UMass was finally able to score on a Perry goal with 2:36 remaining, but were unable to score again despite having five more shots in the final moments of the game. With 2:13 remaining, O'Donnell rung the post on a free position shot and Beckstead made three saves in the final 1:48 to seal the win.
