LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Kevin Quaranto may have hit three home runs for Siena, but it was UMass that came away with the victory, 11-10, in 10 innings at Siena Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the potential tying and winning runs on second and third, junior Mike Gedman fanned Quaranto to end the game and give the Minutemen the win. UMass is now 16-21 on the year, while the Saints fall to 10-32.

The Minutemen plated two runs on two hits in the top of the first. Senior Sam Boone drew a leadoff walk and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by junior Brian Baudinet. Senior Adam Tempesta, who singled to right center to move Boone to third, came home on a two-out single through the right side by junior Mike Donato.

Siena managed to overtake the Minutemen in the bottom of the third. After Jason DeFilippo ripped a two-out single, Dan Paolini and Quaranto sent back-to-back wind-aided balls over the fence in left to give the Saints a 3-2 lead.

However, UMass promptly took the runs back the following inning with a long ball of its own. Freshman Tom Conley and sophomore Matt Gedman started off the frame with two straight singles, while sophomore Kyle Multner ripped three-run home run to left center to put the Minutemen back on top, 5-3.

UMass added four more runs in the fifth, sending nine batters to the plate. Consecutive singles by Donato and Mike Gedman, followed by a walk to Conley, loaded the bases. Then Matt Gedman reached on an error with Donato coming home on the play. Three straight two-out singles by Multner, Boone and Tempesta resulted in the squad's next three runs of the contest, driving in Mike Gedman, Matt Gedman and Multner, respetively.

The Saints cut into UMass' advantage in the bottom of the inning. Anthony Giansanti led off with a single to center, while Quaranto hit a two-run shot to left center that brought the score to 9-5.

Siena then made it a two-run game after scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. William Cardona dropped a single into left and DeFilippo reached on a fielder's choice. The next batter, Paolini, lofted a double to left that plated the pair and trimmed the Saints' deficit to 9-7.

UMass responded with its 10th run of the day in the top of the seventh. Conley singled and, after Matt Gedman sacrificed him over to second, Multner sent a base hit to left to pick up the RBI.

For a third straight inning, Siena managed to push across a pair of runs. Eric Mruczek and Gary DerHagopian opened up the Saints' turn at bat in the seventh with a single and a double, respectively. Two straight RBI groundouts to shortstop by Juan Amador and Nick Messinger then brought the squad within a run of the Minutemen at 10-9.

After holding UMass off the board in the top of the eighth, Quaranto homered for a third time in the game to tie the score at 10 in the bottom half of the inning.

The winning run came across for the Minutemen in the top of the 10th. Tempesta drew a two-out walk and hustled all the way from first on a ball hit into the gap by Baudinet for an RBI double.

Mike Gedman pitched two scoreless innings of relief for UMass and earned the victory (1-4). He surrendered one hit, walked one and struck out three. Dan Lazzaroni took the loss (3-1) for Siena, giving up one run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings on the hill.

Seven members of the Minutemen's lineup had multiple hits on the afternoon, with four players posting three-hit outings. Multner paced UMass' offense with a career-best five RBI and scored twice.

Paolini and Quaranto totaled four RBI apiece for the Saints, both going 3-for-5 at the plate. Cardona was 4-for-5 with a run scored, as well.

UMass will be back in action tomorrow, Apr. 29, when the squad will play host to Vermont at 3 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field.
