ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Behind yet another strong start by a member of the Minutemen's weekend rotation, UMass picked up a 5-1 win over Saint Louis on Sunday to take the three game series with the Billikens, 2-1. The victory moves the Minutemen to 10-18 overall and 4-8 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis falls to 19-16, 6-5 in the conference.
UMass jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Senior Sam Boone and junior Brian Baudinet both reached with walks and came home on a dropped fly ball by the Billikens' right fielder Andrew Guerra. Junior Mike Donato, who reached on the error, scored on an RBI single up the middle by sophomore Peter Copa.
Saint Louis managed its only run of the day in the bottom of the third. J.D. Dunn led off the frame with a single up the middle, stole second, moved to third on an error and crossed the plate on an RBI single by Ryan Bennett.
The Minutemen later added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Copa was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball and freshman Tom Conley plated him with an RBI single through the right side of the infield. Following a double down the left field line by sophomore Matt Gedman, Conley came around to score on an RBI groundout by sophomore Kyle Multner.
Junior Jared Freni pitched masterfully for UMass, throwing a complete game, his first of his career, to record the win (1-1). He scattered six hits, all singles, and allowed just one run, walked two and struck out five. Billikens' starter Dave Sever worked only 0.2 innings and took the loss (3-3), giving up three unearned runs on one hit. He walked two and did not log a strikeout.
Gedman registered two of UMass' five hits on the day as he was 2-for-4 with a double. Donato, Copa, Conley and Multner had one RBI apiece. Tom Pinell accounted for half of Saint Louis' hit total, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Minutemen return to action tomorrow evening, Apr. 13, in Boston, Mass., as the squad will square off against Northeastern for the Beanpot Championship. First pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m. in Fenway Park.
