TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona (7-4) tallied nine runs in the final three innings of the game as the Wildcats topped UMass (2-2) 13-4 in the first of three games this weekend at Jerry Kindall Field. While Bobby Coyle collected three hits and scored once for the Wildcats, Matt Presley was 2-4 at the plate, recording the game's only triple and batting in two runs. Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) and Mike Donato (East Hartford, Conn.) had three hits apiece and brought in three of the four UMass runs. Starting pitcher Preston Guilmet (1-1) earned his first win of the season for the Wildcats after throwing 7 1/3 innings giving up 11 hits and four runs, striking out five while Jared Freni (0-1) threw 5 2/3 for the Minutemen, giving up just seven hits and five runs with one strikeout to take the loss.
Though the Minutemen were on the board first as senior Sam Boone (Takoma Park, Md.) scored on a double to left field by junior captain Baudinet the Wildcats had nothing but answers for UMass as they responded to the one-run lead with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Bryce Ortega started things off for the Wildcats as he was the first to score after reaching on an error. Bobby Coyle and Brad Glenn followed Ortega around the bases after each reaching on a singles to the outfield.
The Wildcats put up another run in the third when Glenn knocked Ortega home for the second time in the game after flying out to center field. The Minutemen answered in the fifth inning as Peter Copa (Malden, Mass.) scored, after being walked, on a single to right from Boone, making the score 4-2, but the flood gates opened in favor of the Wildcats during the sixth inning as they tallied three runs on two hits, including a triple from Presley.
The hot bats continued for the Wildcats for the rest of the game as they add four more runs in the seventh and answered a two-RBI double from Donato with two more runs of their own in their final at bat in the eighth.
Junior Austin Weymouth (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished the day 2-4 at the plate and knocked in one run for the Minutemen. The Wildcats had four players with at least two hits including Jett Bandy and Codi Harshman who had two hits apiece, Harshman also finished with two RBI.
The Minutemen will be back at Jerry Kindall Field tomorrow, Saturday, March 7, to take on the Wildcats for the second of the three game series between the two teams. The game will begin at 4:00 PM.
