AMHERST, Mass. - After a six-point week which included a hat trick at No. 18 Vermont, sophomore forward Casey Wellman was named the Hockey East Co-Player of the Week on Monday. Wellman added an assist to his three goals in the win over the Catamounts before scoring two more goals in overtime loss at No. 9 Quinnipiac.
Wellman also earned UMass Athletics/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week honors alongside Kristina Danella of the women's basketball team. He shared the Hockey East honor with Tanner House of Maine.
The six-point week moved Wellman into a tie for second nationally in points per game (1.67). He has 20 points overall this season (11 goals, 9 assists) which ranks second on the team. Wellman's 11 goals (matching his entire total for 2008-09) ranks third nationally, while his six power play goals are tied for second nationally.
The 2008-09 Hockey East Rookie Scoring Leader has picked up right where he left off as a freshman. The Brentwood, Calif., native ranks fourth among league players this year in points, second in total goals, second in power play points (6-5-11), and first in power play goals.
In UMass' 6-2 victory over the Catamounts, Wellman netted his first career hat trick, which included the game-winning goal, and dished an assist for four points. He followed that performance with two goals in a 5-4 comeback loss to the Bobcats. He scored the lone goal of the second period after UMass trailed 3-0 and then tied the game in the third period with his second score.
The Minutemen moved up to No. 9 nationally in both the USCHO.com and USA Today weekly polls. UMass has a key Hockey East weekend coming up as No. 15 Boston College visits the Mullins Center on Friday night before the Minutemen head to No. 8 UMass Lowell. Friday's game is Operation 8K where the Athletic Department is asking fans to sellout the Mullins Center. Last year's event set a Mullins Center record as 8,389 fans packed the house to see Wellman's overtime game-winning goal against the defending national champion Eagles.
