Three UMass Lacrosse Players Named All-New England

AMHERST, Mass. - Three UMass men's lacrosse players were named to the NEILA All-New England Second Team for 2008. Junior attackman Tim Balise, senior long-stick midfielder Brian Danvers and junior goalie Doc Schneider were all named to the second team. Danvers and Schneider were both named to the first team last year in 2007.
Balise, who was also named to the All-ECAC Second Team in 2008, earned a spot on the second team. Balise led UMass with 33 goals and 39 points. He topped the ECAC in goals and ranked tied for fourth in total points. He is tied for 16th in total goals in NCAA (33) and tied for 17th in NCAA in goals per game (2.36). Balise led team with four man-up goals. Seventh on team in groundballs with 22. He had ten multi-goal games and 13 multi-point games in 2008 and goals and points in 13 of 14 games this season. He was named ECAC Co-Offensive Player of Week three times in 2008: on Feb. 25, April 7 and April 28.
Danvers was an athletic defender, who was a team captain as a senior starting all 14 games as the long-stick defensive midfielder. In 14 games this season, leads team with 36 groundballs along with 15 caused turnovers and first career goal. Helped team to 8.56 GAA. He was part of defense which held Hobart's (4/12) attack pointless in overtime win. Had two groundballs. He had a career-best five groundballs at St. John's (4/5). Danvers scored, on a fastbreak goal off full-field rush vs. Albany (3/11) for first career tally.
Schneider earns earns from the NEILA for the third year in a row. He was the 2006 New England Rookie of the Year. He was named Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week on Feb. 25. Additionally, was ECAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week and UMass Co-Athlete of the Week. Schneider named LaxNews.com College Beat National Player of Week on April 21 after Georgetown game with 20 saves. He stands fourth all-time at UMass in career saves with 548 as he became the the fifth in UMass history with 500 career saves. Schneider had a 8.42 GAA and 59.5 save percentage in 2008. He led ECAC in saves per game with 12.1. He was second in the ECAC save percentage and fourth in goals against average. Schneider ranked eighth in the NCAA in save percentage, and 22nd in goals against average in the nation. He posted 15th-best single-season save total in 2008 with 169.
