No. 14 UMass Lacrosse Bows To Yale, 7-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - No. 14 UMass suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling at Yale, 7-4. The Minutemen struggled offense all afternoon while the defense was stout as Doc Schneider made 13 saves for UMass (1-1). Attackers Tim Balise and Peter McNichols each scored twice for the Minutemen. Yale (1-1) won its first game of the season as the Bulldogs scored the first goal of the game and never trailed.
It marked the second year in a row the Minutemen fell to the Bulldogs, as they suffered a 7-6 loss at Garber Field in 2007. Yale were better in most of the stats on Sunday: shots (25-22), groundballs (32-21) and face-offs (11-3).
Yale was led by Jonathan Koenig, who scored two goals including the first of the game with 4:52 left in the first quarter. Balise tied the game for the only time at 1-1 on a feed from freshman Zach Rodgers with 3:18 left in th first. Rodgers had three helpers in the game.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the second quarter with a goal with 28 seconds left in the first half as Brendan Gibson gave Yale a 4-2 lead heading to intermission off a cutting goal.
Yale scored the only goals of the third quarter as Colin Ford scored a man-up goal midway through the period for a 5-2 lead. Koenig's second goal proved to back-breaker coming with just 10 seconds left in the third quarter giving Yale a 6-2 lead.
McNichols scored on the EMO early in the fourth cut the lead to 6-3 with 12:34 left in the game. But Yale's Michael Karowski beat Schneider for a 7-3 lead. Balise finished the scoring for the game.
Yale's George Carafides made nine saves.
The Minutemen return to action after against another Ivy League squad, Harvard (1-1) next Saturday, March 8 at Garber Field at 1 p.m.
