Quirk, Wellman Earn Honors After Dartmouth Ledyard Classic

AMHERST, Mass. - Following their performances at the Dartmouth Ledyard National Bank Classic, senior captain Cory Quirk and freshman Casey Wellman each earned recognition as UMass defeated Army and fell to Bemidji State. Quirk was named to the All-Tournament Team, while Wellman was named the Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week. UMass returns to action this Sunday against No. 10 Cornell at the Mullins Center (5 PM). Quirk finished the Dartmouth Ledyard Tournament with a goal and an assist to move within seven points off 100 career points. He scored his goal against Bemidji State and added an assist against Army. He finished the tournament with a +1 rating. He has a six-game scoring streak in place with nine points in those game. Against Army his was 7-of-13 on face-offs, while against Bemidji State he was 8-of-15.
Wellman netted a team-leading three points at the Dartmouth Ledyard Tournament with a goal and two assists in the win over Army. He finished with a +4 rating at the Tournament which was tied for the team lead. It was his fourth multi-point game of the season. He also finished with a +1 rating in the loss to Bemidji State. Against Bemidji, he was 5-of-9 on faceoffs, while against Army he was 9-of-13 to lead UMass. Wellman is a plus-10 in the last five games.
This is the league-leading second time Wellman has earned the Hockey East Pro Ambition Rookie of the Week honor. Wellman is currently tied for 13th overall among point leaders in Hockey East with 15 points (4g, 11a), eighth in assists, and third among rookie scorers. Nationally, Wellman is tied for 11th in rookie scoring.
Quirk now has 19 points on six goals and 13 assists this season which is tied for fifth overall in Hockey East. He is tied for third in assists, leads the league in short-handed points (1-2-3), and is tied for 14th in goals. Nationally, he ranks among the top-35 in the country in both points and assists.
UMass improved to 9-7-1 overall after the 4-1 win over Army. The Cornell game will be the Mintuemen's final non-conference game of the season before starting the second half of Hockey East play.
