Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the UMass hockey blog for tonight's game against St. Lawrence of the ECAC. Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving Day with friends and family and glad you are joining us for a little post-holiday hockey action!
7:09 PM - Sorry for the delay tonight, but we had a few minor issues with our streaming video and audio broadcasts. Everything is up and working as we bring you UMass' first non-conference game since the 6-0 shutout at RPI.
Tonight's starters for UMass are Chase Langeraap (left wing), Cory Quirk (center), Chris Davis (right wing), Topher Bevis (left defense), John Wessbecker (right defense), and Paul Dainton in goal.
The starters for St. Lawrence tonight are Alex Curran (left wing), Travis Vermeulen (center), Mike McKenzie (right wing), Shawn Fensel (left defense), Matt Generous (right defense) and Robby Moss in goal for the Saints.
7:12 PM - Six minutes into the game now and it is still a scoreless affair. The Saints have applied some nice pressure offensively, but the UMass defense has been able to bother the shooters making the shots either go wide or getting blocks and deflections on the puck.
7:18 PM - The Saints get on the scoreboard first on Alex Curran's first goal of the season. He tipped home a wrister from the slot by Mike McKenzie, 1-0 Saints with 10 minutes left in the first period.
7:22 PM - St. Lawrence takes a high sticking penalty giving the Minutemen the first power play of the night - 6:38 remaining in the first period.
7:26 PM - The Saints kill off the penalty and we are back to even strength.
7:27 PM - A matching minor makes it 4x4 hockey. With just 30 seconds left on the penalties, Zach Miskovic nets his fourth goal of the season after Kevin DeVergilio flips the puck ahead to Miskovic who slips behind the UMass defense at center ice for a one-on-one with Paul Dainton.
7:30 PM - Brock McBride takes St. Lawrence's third penalty of the game giving UMass another power play that will carry over into the second period.
7:49 PM -Start of the second period and UMass has 1:30 left on the power play.
7:55 PM -St. Lawrence is whistled for a hooking penalty with 15:40 left in the second period and then gets called for another penalty 14 seconds later giving UMass a 5x3 power play for 1:46.
7:59 PM -UMass peppers the Saints goal with a flurry of shots including four hard wristers from Justin Braun, but no dice as St. Lawrence kills off both penalties. Credit Saints goalie Robby Moss with several nice saves including tough glove save while basically surrounded by Minutemen and falling on his stomach.
UMass is outshooting the Saints 5-0 to start the second period.
8:03 PM -Another Saints goal makes it 3-0 as Mike McKenzie gets another SLU breakaway. Four minutes later and Zach Miskovic makes 4-0 coming off a faceoff.
8:15 PM -Cory Quirk gets UMass on the board with a short-handed goal. Following a St. Lawrence turnover, Scott Crowder controlled the puck around center ice, skated in towards the left faceoff circle and fired a shot that was initially saved by Moss. Quirk followed up the shot, spun counter clockwise just outside the crease collecting the rebound and backhanding the rebound into the goal.
8:38 PM -Start of the 3rd period and UMass has 1:38 left on the power play and still trail 4-1.
8:52 PM -Still no luck in the scoring column for UMass and with 10:53 remaining, Casey Wellman is called for boarding giving St. Lawrence a power play.
8:54 PM -Things not getting better for UMass as the Minutemen are whistled for a bench minor for having too many men on the ice. St. Lawrence receives a 5x3 power play for 1:15.
9:02 PM -5 minutes left in the game. UMass is still battling to get another goal on the board, but it's not looking good right now.
