AMHERST, Mass. - Former UMass hockey star Mark Matheson has signed with the Nashville Predators organization, and will play with the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League next season. Matheson played in nine games with Milwaukee at the end of the 2006-07 on an Amateur Tryout (ATO) contract. He played both defense and forward for UMass last season as he helped the Minutemen reach the 2007 NCAA Division I quarterfinals, the best showing in the program's history.
"That (tryout period) was just so they can see if you can play," Matheson told the Springfield Republican. "I've played forward and defense, but they look at me more as a defenseman, I guess, for now at least."
"He is more of a defenseman, to be sure, but he's very skilled with the puck," UMass Head Coach Toot Cahoon said. "Not many people carried the puck as well as he did."
The 6-2, 205-pounder from Calgary, Alberta, topped the team with 13 goals in 2006-07. He was third on the roster with 24 points. He led Hockey East Defenseman in goals and was second in NCAA. He served as an assistant captain. Matheson was also selected to Hockey East's All-Academic team in 2006.
