AMHERST, Mass. - After helping the men's soccer team to two shutout victories over the weekend in the UMass/Holy Cross Invitational, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. Simmons has four shutouts and a scant 0.16 goals against average this season through six games and the Minutemen have given up just one goal.
This is Simmons' first honor as a conference player of the week. Last season he was selected during the regular season as a rookie of the week and named to the all-rookie team prior to the A-10 Tournament.
Last week, Simmons helped UMass to a perfect 2-0 record on the week with a 1-0 win over Siena on Friday and a 1-0 overtime win against St. Bonaventure on Sunday. He led the Minutemen to the UMass/Holy Cross Invitational Trophy and was named to the All-Tournament Team. He played all 186 minutes and one second in goal making eight saves (four in each game) while facing 16 shots (8 in each game).
The two shutout wins improve him to 5-0-1 this season and 12-9-3 for his career. He now has five shutouts this season and nine for his career ... for the season, has lowered his goals against average to 0.16 and is posting a .957 save percentage.
Along with the Minuteman defense, UMass has allowed just one goal all season and has not allowed a goal in 388 minutes and 48 seconds going back to the Boston University game on August 27.
UMass will face Hartford this Friday at 2 p.m. to kick-off the UMass Invitational. The Minutemen will then play Vermont on Sunday at 2 p.m. Admission is free to all.
