Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Bryan Adamski's (South Deerfield, Mass.) three-run home run with two outs in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Minutemen (9-18, 7-8 A-10) to a 6-3 victory over Saint Louis (19-19, 8-7 A-10) on Sunday afternoon. Adamski also came in the bottom half of the inning to record the final three outs to pick up the save, his third in the last three days. The win gives the Minutemen their first A-10 conference sweep of the season. Offensively, the Minutemen were led by Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) and Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.), who went 2-4 and 3-5 respectively.

The story for the majority of the game was the pitching as both squads got quality outings from their starters. UMass' Rory McDonald (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hurled nine innings allowing five hits, one walk and just two earned runs while striking out four as he improved to 2-2. Billiken starter Ryan Bird scattered eight hits in his 7.1 innings pitched while allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out six Minutemen. B.J. Rodriguez took the loss after allowing the 10th inning home run as he fell to 2-1

Trailing 3-1, the Minutemen caught two huge breaks in the top half of the eighth as the Billiken defense committed back-to-back errors leading to two runs. An error by newly-inserted third baseman Tom Pinnell allowed UMass to have runners on second and third with one out. Shortstop Matt Mach then muffed an Adamski grounder allowing both Franczek and junior Lou Proietti (Hamilton, Ont.) to score knotting the game at 3-3.

The Billikens broke a 0-0 tie in the fourth with a run on a RBI single through the left side by Greg Rodgers. Saint Louis would tack on two more in the fifth inning as John Guyre singled home Tim Landry and Ryan Crespi followed with a RBI scrifice fly to center, extending the lead to 3-0.

The Minutemen fought back pushing across one run on two hits in the top half of the sixth. Proietti stroked a two out double down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position for the Minutemen. Tempesta followed and made the most of the opportunity, singling through the left side to bring home Proietti and cutting the Billiken lead to 3-1.

The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they take on Northeastern in the Beanpot at 1 p.m. at historic Fenway Park. Be sure to check back to umassathletics.com for a complete recap and updated stats after the game.
