UMass Opens A-10 Action Against Rhode Island Today
• The Minutemen open their Atlantic 10 schedule today hosting the Rhode Island Rams here at Rudd Field. The Rams have had UMass' number the last couple of years as Rhode Island knocked the Minutemen out of contention for the 2003 and 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournaments in the final games of those seasons.
• Last season saw URI blank UMass 2-0 in Kingston. The Minutemen had made a late season surge to move into the top six teams in the conference before dropping three of its final four games including the season finale to the Rams.
• URI holds a 25-18-4 all-time record against UMass in the series. The Minutemen last defeated URI in 2000 during the regular season before falling to the Rams at the A-10 Tournament. Rhode Island has defeated UMass in the last five straight games.
No Place Like Home
• The Rudd Field Advantage has been strong for the Minutemen since the facility's opening in 2002. Over the past three seasons, UMass has posted an 20-10-2 (.700) overall record at home outscoring opponents 86-to-43.
• The shut out against Navy was the ninth shut out posted at Rudd Field. The previous time UMass held an opponent scoreless at the complex was Oct. 29, 2004 in a 4-0 win against A-10 rival St. Bonaventure.
Atlantic 10 Excellence
• Sam Koch has had most of his success come against Atlantic 10 opponents. During his 14 years at UMass, Koch has posted a 80-41-10 record (.659 winning percentage) against Atlantic 10 opposition, and has a winning record against every team but one, Rhode Island. Against out-of-conference foes, Koch is 66-50-10 (.551 winning percentage).
