Amherst, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team defeated McGill University, 2-1, before over 200 fans on a sun-drenched afternoon at Rudd Fied, Sunday. It was an exhibition game against one of Canada's top collegiate programs. All of the scoring came in the first half. UMass scored first, 16:30 into the game, as Erica Wideberg (Randolph, N.J.) took a feed from Lindsey Fairweather (Kingston, Mass) and put it past McGill goalkeeper Kristina Perusco. McGill, the bronze medalist last year in Canadian collegiate soccer, tied the game at 1-1 at the 29:23 mark on a free kick from Catherine Scott. The Minutewomen took the lead for good at the 41:01 mark, as Lindsey Bellini (Webster, N.Y.) scored. Fairweather picked up her second assist and Britt Canfield (Southwick, Mass.) had the other one on Bellini's goal. "We had great defensive intensity," said UMass coach Jim Rudy. "I was fairly pleased for 65 minutes. We faded a little bit at the end with the combination of long grass and the amount of substitution. It was my last chance to look at everyone. Thursday we'll play with the starting group." Both teams had six shots. Perusco went all the way in goal for McGill and made four saves. Kristen Rutland (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Kristin Walker (Lincoln Park, N.J.) split time in goal. Together they accounted for five saves. The Minutewomen, now 1-0-1 in the exhibition season, play one more exhibition on Thursday against Albertson Elite at 12 noon at Rudd Field. The regular season opens Sunday August 29 at 1 p.m. against Boston University at Rudd Field on the UMass campus.
