BALTIMORE, Md. - Former University of Massachusetts lacrosse star Sal LoCascio (Islip, N.Y.) has been selected for induction to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. LoCascio is one of 10 members in the Hall's 47th class, which will be officially inducted on Saturday, November 20, at the Baltimore Marriott Hunt Valley Inn in Hunt Valley, Md. Plaques for each individual will be located in the Lacrosse Museum and National Hall of Fame at the U.S. Lacrosse headquarters in Baltimore, Md.

LoCascio was a four-year letterwinner on the UMass lacrosse team from 1986-1989, earning USILA All-America honors at goalie in each of his four seasons. A three-time New England Player of the Year selection and four-time All-New England honoree, LoCascio holds the all-time NCAA record for career saves with 931. He was the starting goalie on four consecutive NCAA tournament and New England Championship teams from 1986-1989, including the 1989 team that was the first UMass team to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. LoCascio led the team in saves all four seasons, and his four single-season save totals are the four best in UMass history, including a record 271 in 1987. He served as team co-captain as a senior, and set an NCAA record with 29 saves in an NCAA tournament first-round game against Johns Hopkins in 1986. LoCascio started all 54 games he played in his four-year career, and as a senior participated in the North South All-Star game.

Following the completion of his UMass career, LoCascio played for the winning U.S. team in the 1990, 1994 and 1998 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships, and was named the outstanding goalie at the 1994 championship. He helped Long Island Hofstra to four United States Club Lacrosse Association (USCLA) championships, was the USCLA player of the year in 1995, was a six-time all-pro with the New York Saints of the National Lacrosse League and helped the Long Island Lizards to the inaugural Major League Lacrosse championship in 2001. LoCascio also served as a head coach in both the NLL and MLL. He has previously been inducted into the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame and the U.S. Lacrosse Long Island Chapter Hall of Fame.

In addition to LoCascio, this year's National Lacrosse Hall of Fame class includes Jane Barbieri, Dick Edell, Rosalia Gioia, Jackie Hufnell, Barb Jordan, Peter Kohn, Dave Pietramala, Ruth Stevenson and Mike Thearle.

Candidates for the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame must have been out of college for 15 years and are nominated through a questionnaire. The top candidates are included on a national ballot sent to a random sampling of current Hall of Fame members, coaches, officials, reporters, U.S. Lacrosse Board of Directors and chapter presidents. The men's and women's nominating committees use the votes from that sampling to determine a final slate of nominees to submit to the Board of Directors. The Board approved the current class at its June 12 meeting.
