AMHERST, Mass. - Brothers Gene and Matt Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) earned ECAC Riddell Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week and ECAC Rookie of the Week recognition, respectively, after leading the Minutemen to a 17-8 victory over Penn State on Saturday. It marks the first time in league history that a pair of brothers were named weekly award winners in the same week.
Gene Tundo earns his first career ECAC Player of the Week honor and third weekly ECAC honor (two-time Rookie of the Week in 2002), after tallying a career-best six points (2 g, 4 a) in UMass' 17-8 victory over Penn State. The junior attack's four assists tied a career high, set earlier this season against Sacred Heart and in 2002 against Georgetown. He currently ranks fourth on the team with 17 points (6 g, 11 a) and his 11 helpers is tops on the squad. For his career, Tundo has scored 73 points (28 g, 45 a), and needs only 13 assists to tie Mark Millon for 15th on the UMass career assist list.
Matt Tundo earns his second straight ECAC Rookie of the Week citation after contributing four points (3 g, 1 a) in the triumph over Penn State. He tallied his second career hat trick and second in three games. He currently ranks fifth on the team with 16 points (13 g, 3 a), and his 13 goals is fourth on the squad. He has one game-winning goal to his credit and 29 shots for a .448 shot percentage to rank second on the team in that category. The freshman attack has also scooped up seven ground balls, including one in the win over PSU, on the season.
The Tundo Brothers and teammates will battle Manhattan at Garber Field on Friday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m. It is the first night lacrosse game at Garber Field since 1999. For ticket information, call 1-866-UMASS-TIX.
