WASHINGTON, D.C. -The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team will travel to Washington, D.C., for a key ECAC matchup with the No. 7-ranked Georgetown University Hoyas. The 6-5 Minutemen need a strong finish for a possible NCAA Tournament bid. Face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Harbin Field.
UMass quick shots...
? The Minutemen saw a four-game winning streak snapped against Yale, 9-8 in double overtime... UMass has dominated the shot category all year, this time outshooting the Bulldogs, 44-25. The Minutemen have outshot their foes 443-280 on the season (40.3 to 25.5 per game). UMass has been outshot only once this season (Brown)... Despite the setback, UMass has outscored its foes 59-28 over the last five games, and has allowed only two teams (Penn State and Yale) to score more than four goals in a game in that span... The Minutemen fell to 1-2 this season on natural grass, and since the start of last season, UMass is 1-3.
Overtime blues...
? Yale abrubtly ended UMass' modest four-game winning streak with a 9-8 double-overtime victory last Saturday. The Minutemen led 7-4 with 20 minutes to play in regulation, but needed a late Neil Lundberg to push the game into overtime. The overtime appearance marked the first of the season and the first time since the 1997 season that UMass played in a double-overtime game. Under head coach Greg Cannella, the Minutemen are 1-7, with the only victory coming last year against Syracuse (14-13).
Fab Freshmen...
? A reason for UMass' turnaround has been the play of several freshmen. The highly-regarded rookie class has accounted for 37 points (25 g, 12 a). The 37 points is 21.6 percent of all scoring, the 25 goals is 22.5 percent of all the goals and the 12 assists is 20.0 percent of all the assists. In UMass' 16-4 win over Manhattan, freshmen accounted for eight points (6 g, 2 a), and two Minutemen (Larmon and Whelan) notched their first career goals.
Rather play on the fake stuff...
? With UMass' 9-8 loss to Yale, the Minutemen fell to 1-2 this season when playing on natural grass. The lone win came in the 17-8 triumph over Penn State. Last season, the Minutemen suffered their only loss when playing on the grassy surface, at Rutgers, 12-9. This week's contest at Georgetown is played on natural grass.
And the beat goes on...
? Chris Doyle is off to another fast start for the Minutemen, ranking second on the team with 24 points (21 g, 3 a). He has scored in 16 straight games, and 25 of the last 27 contests, dating back to the start of last year. His 21 goals is the team lead, and he has scored at least two goals in five straight games. He set a career high, tallying four goals in the win over Manhattan.
Stepping it up...
? With the injury to Jeff Zywicki, someone has needed to step up and take charge on offense. That someone has become Kevin Glenz. He leads the Minutemen with 26 points (16 g, 10 a) and netted his 50th career point with an assist against Sacred Heart on March 23. His 26 points are a career high for him already with at least three games left in his senior season. He has scored 59 points in his career and notched his 30th career goals against Penn State.
Shut 'em down...
? Despite only a 6-5 record, the Minuteman defense has played excellent this season. UMass has held seven teams, including five straight, to nine or fewer goals in a game, and is giving up only 7.38 goals per outing. In 25 of the 44 quarters played this season, the Minuteman defense has held its opponents to one or fewer goals. UMass has allowed only one foe to outshoot it (Brown) and only three teams over 30 shots. When Yale scored 4:25 into the first quarter, it ended a shutout streak of 42:07, dating back to the first half of the Manhattan game. It marked the second time this season that UMass had a shutout streak of over 40 minutes.
The human vacuum cleaner...
? Sophomore defenseman Jack Reid has made his presence felt on the defensive end. The Glastonbury, Conn., native leads the Minutemen with 45 ground balls, but has picked up 20 in the last three games. Against Penn State, he snatched up a career-best eight ground balls. He recorded four against Manhattan, then equaled the career-best set two games earlier with eight against Yale. For his career, in only 26 games, Reid has gobbled up 78 ground balls, an average of 3.00 per game.
On the leaderboard...
? The Minutemen are well-represented on the NCAA leaderboards. Individually, Bill Schell is 10th in the country in goals against average with a 7.51 GAA. As a team, UMass is tied for 19th in scoring offense with a 10.09 gpg average, ninth in scoring defense at 7.45 gpg and tied for 10th in scoring margin at +2.64 gpg.
