Two Minutemen Earn ECAC Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts lacrosse team had two players earn weekly ECAC honors, announced today. Junior goalie Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) was named defensive player of the week while freshman attack Matt Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was selected as the league's rookie of the week.
Schell had his best week of the young season, posting wins over Sacred Heart (12-4) and 13th-ranked Hofstra (6-3). Against Sacred Heart, he stopped eight shots, allowed only four goals and shut out the Pioneers in three of the four quarters. Then against Hofstra, he stopped 13 of 16 shots (a save percentage of .812), and allowed only three goals. For the week, he was 2-0 with a 3.60 GAA and a .750 save percentage, and now boasts a 7.68 GAA and a .558 save percentage on the season.
Tundo led the Minuteman offense the past week with four goals, including his first career hat trick in the 12-4 victory over Sacred Heart. The freshman ranks fourth on the squad in both goals (10) and points (12).
UMass will take to the road this weekend with a contest at ECAC rival Penn State on Saturday, April 3. Face-off is slated for noon in University Park, Pa.
