AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts ice hockey senior Tim Vitek (Dresden, Ontario) and junior Gabe Winer (Stoughton, Mass.) have both earned weekly honors for their play this past week. Winer has been selected as the CCM Hockey East Player of the Week while Vitek earned Dinn Brothers/UMass Athlete of the Week honors. Vitek will receive his award at Wednesday's Weekly Sports Luncheon at 12:00 p.m. in Campus Center room 1009.
Winer made a regular season career-high 51 saves Friday night as the Minutemen tied No. 1 Boston College, 3-3. Winer stopped 21 of 22 shots in the third period alone to preserve just the second positive outcome (1-7-1) ever for Massachusetts against the nation's top team. For the season, Winer is 4-2-1 with a 2.45 GAA and a .917 save percentage. Gabe Winer's 51 saves vs. BC were the most by any goaltender in a Hockey East league game since former Minuteman Mike Johnson made 60 saves on February 23, 2001. Coincidentally, that game also ended in a 3-3 tie for UMass at Boston College.
Vitek scored four goals for Massachusetts this past weekend to earn his first-ever athlete of the week honor. He tallied two goals, including the tying goal in the third period, of Friday night's 3-3 tie at No. 1 Boston College. He then added another pair of goals in the Minutemen's 6-1 win over Mercyhurst at the Mullins Center on Sunday. Vitek is currently fifth on the team in scoring this year with five goals and one assist. He has tallied all of those points in the last four games.
Massachusetts will kick off a four-game road trip at Maine on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on WRNX, 100.9 FM or on the Internet at www.umassathletics.com.
