Women Host Temple To Wrap Philly Visitors Weekend
UMass hosts its second opponent from Philadelphia this weekend as the Minutewomen welcome Temple to Rudd Field for today's 1 p.m. kickoff. The Minutewomen dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon, playing even the whole game before the Hawks scored late in the game.
Temple comes in off a 5-0 loss to Rhode Island on Friday. The Owls are 3-6 overall and 0-2 in Atlantic 10 play.
After a difficult schedule to open the season including a four-game road swing spanning more than three weeks, the UMass women's soccer continues its season-long five game homestand. It continues next weekend as Richmond and George Washington come to town to wrap the home stretch.
Series With Temple
UMass is 9-3 all-time against the Owls dating to the start of the series in 1993. The Minutewomen lost to Temple in overtime last season, 2-1, on October 31. In the loss Michelle Luttati scored for UMass with just 25 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. But Temple's Stephanie Vietry scored the winner off a pass from her sister Samantha in the 107th minute.
UMass won the last game at Rudd Field, beating the Owls, 6-1, on Oct. 25, 2002.

Rudy Wins No. 200
UMass head coach Jim Rudy picked up his 200th career coaching win at UMass last Monday, defeating Holy Cross, 4-1. Rudy comes into today's match with a 200-102-16 all-time record with the Minutewomen since taking over the reigns in 1988.
Rudy has an overall mark of 274-125-22 including his seasons at Central Florida from 198-87. He is currently the fourth winningest coach in women's soccer history, trailing only North Carolina's Anson Dorrance, UConn's Len Tsantiris and Santa Clara's Jerry Smith.
Red Hot Roehrig
Freshman Jenny Roehrig (Coram, N.Y.) has been the hottest UMass player of late. The rookie has scored in three of the last four games and has the game-winning goal in both of the Minutewomen's victories this season.
Minutewomen's Last Game: UMass Drops Heartbreaker, 1-0
Megan Schutt scored her first goal of the year at the 72:09 mark to give the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team a 1-0 win over the University of Massachusetts on a beautiful sunny afternoon at Rudd Field. Sophomore Kristin Walker (Lincoln Park, N.J.) made seven saves in net for the Minutewomen.
With the loss, UMass fell to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Saint Joseph's improved to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the league.
The game was very physical as there were 25 total fouls called, 16 of them against Massachusetts. The first scoring chance by either team came less than four minutes into the game. Schutt received the ball about five yards in front of the UMass net with her back to the goal. She quickly spun around and let loose a shot, but Walker was there for the save. UMass' best chance to score first came with 25:45 left in the first half. Senior Lindsey Fairweather (Kingston, Mass.) got the ball off a corner kick right in front of the net seven yards out, but her shot sailed over the cross bar.
Walker kept the Minutewomen in the game with two more big saves in the first half. The first came with 6:03 left on a header by Jen Harris. Then the second came with just under three minutes left. Ginnette Buffone got the ball inside the box after a corner kick. Her shot was blocked by a UMass defender but bounced right to Schutt. Schutt ripped a low hard shot headed for inside the right post, but Walker dove and made the save.
The second half was evenly played as well, but it was the Hawks who were able to score late in the game. With just 17:51 showing on the clock, Schutt took a pass from Kaiti McCaffery in front of the net and was able to slide a shot past Walker to the far post for the game's only score.
UMass had one last chance to tie the game in regulation. Freshman Britt Canfield (Granville, Mass.) broke in down the right side. As she got in the box, SJU keeper Jen Kuhn came out of the net and Canfield was able to get the ball by her. Canfield's shot, however, ended up in the netting on the right side of the goal.
Both teams took 16 shots in the game and Saint Joseph's had three more corner kicks at 8-5. Walker made seven saves for the Minutewomen while Kuhn stopped five shots on the other end.
Owls' Last Game: Temple Falls 5-0 To URI
Rhode Island's all-league duo of Megan and Melanie Kasparek combined for five goals to lead the Rams to a 5-0 victory over Temple on Friday night. URI, one of the contender's in the Atlantic 10 race, outshot the Owls 24-4 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Rams improve to 5-6, 2-0 in the A-10, while TU drops to 3-6, 0-2.
Megan Kasparek started the scoring just 1:34 in off a corner kick from Kelly McTurk and her sister Melanie, the reigning A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, tallied the first of her three goals 10 minutes later. Melanie added another at the 23:40 mark, while Megan followed two minutes later with her second goal to give URI a 4-0 lead.
Melanie completed the hat-trick in the 52nd minute off another assist from McTurk. Rhode Island's Ria Carroll and Kirsten Marra made three saves to combine for the shutout.
Senior Jackie Mauro (five saves) and sophomore Elizabeth Tarasevich (three saves) split time in net for Temple.
