UMass Takes Alumni Lacrosse Challenge

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts defeated a strong field and claimed the first annual National Lacrosse Alumni Challenge with a 10-7 victory over heavily-favored Princeton in the finals. UMass posted a 4-1 record in the tournament. The Minutemen gained revenge on the Tigers in the finals, as Princeton was the only team to defeat them in the challenge.
The 1st Annual National Lacrosse Alumni Challenge reunited over 600 former collegiate lacrosse players with their former teammates. Twenty-eight alumni teams participated, comprised of men and women players from 22 to 52 years old, including Major League Lacrosse All-Stars and Men's and Women's National Team Players.
The tournament not only brought back some of the greatest players in the game, including Casey Powell, Jesse Hubbard, Jen Adams and Cherie Greer, but brought together alumni from schools like NC State and Washington College, many of whom had not seen each other in over 15 years. Coaches in attendance included, Sue Stahl - US National Team and Old Dominion Coach; Bill Tierney - Princeton Coach; Julie Myers - Virginia Coach, and Ray Rostan - US National Team Assistant Coach and Hampden-Sydney Head Coach.
In the Men's Elite finals, UMass upset heavily favored Princeton, winning 10-7. With a balanced attack that included MLL stand-outs, Chris Fiore ('03) and Kevin Leveille ('03), UMass never trailed as they defeated the talented Tigers and avenged its only defeat. Other UMass grads that competed were current UMass assistant coach Chris Gabrielli ('01), Keith Gabrielli ('01), Marc Morley ('02), Dan Paccione ('02), A.J. Cappelli ('02), Adam Waxer ('97), Tim Socha ('00), Chris Campolettano ('01), Mike Young ('00), Dusty Smith ('02), John Madigan ('01), Rich Kunkel ('01) and Paul Hutchen ('02). The team was coached by Harold Drumm ('98).
