Barrett and Villarroel On A-10 All-Rookie Team

PHILADELPHIA - University of Massachusetts women's soccer freshmen Stephanie Barrett (Katonah, N.Y.) and Nadia Villarroel (Belmont, Mass.) were each selected to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie team the league office announced this morning.
Barrett is a central defender/midfielder from John Jay (N.Y.) H.S. She was a 2000 member of the Eastern New York ODP team and plays club ball for the Yorktown Jaguars, the same squad which produced UMass' second all-time leading scorer Kara Green. She is a two-time All-League pick as well as a 2002 All-Section member. In 2002, Barrett was the League I-B's leading scorer with 34 goals (school single-season record) and 14 assists en route to MVP honors. She was also a Journal News All-Star in 2002.
Villarroel is a back and midfielder who attended Belmont (Mass.) H.S. She was a member of the 2000 Region I Olympic Development Program (ODP) and a four-time Massachusetts ODP member. At Belmont, Villarroel was a two-time Middlesex League first team All-Star, a two-time Eastern Mass. All-Star, 2002 All-State selection and a two-time League and Eastern Mass. MVP runner-up. Villarroel, who scored 106 career points, led her 2002 team to a Division II North Sectional Championship. She is currently a member of the Stars of Massachusetts club team.
The Minutewomen will open up the 2003 season against Quinnipiac on Saturday, August, 30 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at Agawam High School.
