Holtz And Team Canada Qualify For Olympics

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico - Former University of Massachusetts softball pitcher/designated player Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) was 2-0 and has helped lead the Canadian Softball team to an undefeated record in round-robin play at the Americas Olympic Qualifier. Team Canada went 8-0 in double-elimination round-robin play and then swept the Dominican Republic by scores of 3-2 and 3-0 in the best-of-three championship series on Saturday to earn a trip to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Holtz tossed 10 scoreless innings while fanning 12 batters and walking just one in the tournament. She scattered five hits in her two games in the circle.
On Tuesday, July 22, Holtz fanned seven batters and did not surrender a walk en route to a 9-0 shutout over Puerto Rico. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but was touched for two singles in the final frame. Then on Wednesday, July 23, she scattered three hits while walking one and fanning five in a 7-0 win over Venezuela.
Six of the eight Canadian victories came via the shutout, including Friday's 17-0 win over the Cayman Islands to conclude round-robin play.
Up next for Team Canada is the Pan American Games, taking place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 1-17.
