AMHERST, Mass. - UMass hockey player Thomas P?ck (Klagenfurt, Austria) was named Hockey East defensive player of the week after leading the Minutemen to two impressive wins over the weekend. UMass defeated No. 7-ranked Boston College, 3-2, on Friday night, before topping Providence, 5-4, on Sunday. The sweep moved UMass' record to 12-7-1 overall and 6-5-0 in the Hockey East.
P?ck scored four goals over the weekend, including the first hat trick for a defenseman in school history. In Friday's win over Boston College, P?ck started a UMass rally with a second-period goal that cut the Eagles' lead to 2-1. On Sunday, the Austrian Olympian, scored two power-play netters in the second period, then tallied the game-winner with just 27 seconds remaining to give the Minutemen a dramatic 5-4 victory. With his third goal, P?ck set a school record for season goals by a defenseman with 10. P?ck is tied for second on the team with 20 points (10 g, 10 a) and is the top scoring defenseman in the Hockey East Conference and fourth in the NCAA in defenseman scoring. P?ck joins Maine goalie Jim Howard as the only three-time winners of Hockey East weekly awards.
The red-hot Minutemen will look to continue their winning ways on Friday, Jan. 10, with a 7:00 p.m. game at the Mullins Center against surprising Merrimack. The Minutemen head to Merrimack on Saturday night.
