AMHERST, Mass.- Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) was named the first winner of the Dinn Brothers UMass Athlete of the Week announced today.
Deren, a senior forward, led UMass to a 1-1-0 record in the Navy Fall Soccer Classic. He scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute in the Minutemen's 3-2 win over Towson on Friday, Aug. 30. The goal earned Head Coach Sam Koch his 124th win, which moved him into the top spot on the school's victory list. The goal also moved Deren into eighth place on the career goals scored list with 27. He needs 14 goals to take over the top spot.
Deren was named a preseason All-Atlantic 10 and preseason All-American selection by College Soccer News. He earned Honorable Mention All-American (first for UMass soccer since 1977), All-Atlantic 10 honors and was the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year in 2001. He led the Minutemen to their first NCAA Tournament berth in school history, a school-record 15 wins and scored 38 points (16 g, 6 a) last season, which ranked third on the school's single-season list.
