AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse Head Coach Greg Cannella announced today that Chris Gabrielli will join his staff as an assistant coach. Gabrielli replaces Terry Mangan, who left to take the head coaching vacancy at Lafayette (Pa.) College after two seasons with the Minutemen.
Gabrielli's primary duties will include working with the defense and face-off units, as well as recruiting. He spent last year as the Director of Ticket Sales for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse.
In four years at Massachusetts, Gabrielli dished out five assists and scooped up 127 ground balls as a top defender. During his senior campaign in 2001, he was named a second team All-ECAC Conference selection, as UMass shared the league title and captured the New England Championship.
"We are very pleased to bring Chris back," said Canella. "He was a tenacious player and superb leader. Those qualities make him an outstanding coach. Chris knows and believes in our philosophies and style. I look forward to having him work and lead our players."
Last season, the Minutemen went 12-3 and won the ECAC crown outright. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament before falling to top-seeded Johns Hopkins in overtime.
