Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. -- The UMass men's soccer team played one of its better defensive games, but gave up a late goal in falling to New Hampshire, 1-0, in action Wednesday at Rudd Field.

UMass' record drops to 2-4-0 overall heading into Saturday's 1:00 p.m. game at Maine.

The two teams waged a physical, defensive battle for the most part of the game's first 45 minutes. The Minutemen, who had allowed 14 goals already on the season entering the game, held the Wildcats to four shots in the first period, while managing only six themselves. Neither team could get into a flow as 22 fouls, 11 each, were called in the first half.

The Minutemen started to put on more pressure in the second half, firing 12 shots on goal. UMass had several strong scoring opportunities, but it was the Wildcats who made the most of their chances. UNH had two shots in the second half, but Josh Herald's only attempt of the game resulted in the game-winner, as he moved right and fired a dart past a diving UMass goalkeeper at the 79:15 mark for a 1-0 lead.

The Minutemen had some offense left in them, sending several balls toward the net. UMass' best chance to tie the game when Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) rocket from just outside the penalty box sailed over the crossbar in the 84th minute. UNH then ran out the clock to end a two-game losing streak to UMass. UMass has now been shut out in two straight games for the first time since the 1999 season.
