AMHERST, Mass.- Jeff Deren was recently named a 2002 College Soccer News Preseason All-American. It's the latest of several honors the senior forward has received.
Deren, who hails from Chicopee, Mass., earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in 2001 after leading the Minutemen and the Atlantic 10 Conference with 38 points (16 g, 6 a). He was UMass' first soccer All-American since 1977, and currently ranks eighth in career scoring with 64 points (27 g, 10 a). His 27 career goals rank him tied for eighth.
In addition to being named All-American last season, Deren also earned Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year honors, second team All-New England recognition and was a 2002 Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection.
"Jeff has been slowed by injuries in the past, but now people are starting to see how great of a player he is," said UMass Head Coach Sam Koch.
Deren has one goal (a game-winner in the 89th minute against Towson) in one game so far this year.
