AMHERST, Mass. -
Softball Canada's Women's National Team Program announced that University of Massachusetts senior pitcher Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) has been selected to the 17-member roster which will represent Canada at the 2002 Canada Cup and 2002 Women's ISF World Softball Championship.
Holtz is no stranger to international competition as she was also a member of the 2001 Canadian National Team and the 1999 Canadian Junior Team. She is also coming off a solid performance for Canada at the 2002 U.S. Cup. She appeared in two games as a relief pitcher and threw 10 innings while allowing eight hits, striking out five and compiling a 3.50 ERA.
Holtz, the 2002 Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, compiled a 23-7 record and a 0.90 ERA this past season for UMass. She tossed 13 shutouts and struck out 175 batters, while yielding a mere 131 hits in 210.2 innings.
Some of her accolades this past season include Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP, first team ECAC Division I All-Stars, first team Verizon Academic All-District I team and second team NFCA All-Region team. She was also a three-time WHMP/UMass Athlete of the Week selection and was named the A-10 and ECAC Pitcher of the Week once as well.
This year's Canadian National Team will compete at the ninth Canada Cup, July 13-21, in Surrey, British Columbia. They will then compete in the World Championships, July 26-Aug. 4, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where the top four teams gain Olympic berths to the 2004 games in Athens, Greece.
