Softball Duo Tabbed To The Verizon Academic All-America Team

Amherst, Mass. - University of Massachusetts seniors Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) and Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) were named to the Verizon Academic All-America Softball team as announced today by the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Rooney was a first team selection and graduated with a 3.52 grade point average (GPA) with a degree in Sport Management. She led the Atlantic 10 Conference in batting (.374), hits (77), runs (49), triples (seven) and total bases (100). Rooney's 77 hits set an all-time Massachusetts record for hits in a single-season. She was the 2002 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, a 2002 first team All-Region outfielder and a 2002 Verizon Academic All-Region pick.
Hadley, who was a first team All-American pitcher, graduated with degrees in sociology and elementary education with a 3.46 GPA. She ranked fifth nationally with a 0.69 ERA and led the league with 25 wins this season. Hadley limited her opponents to 129 hits overall and 16 extra-base hits in 193.0 innings pitched. She tossed nine shutouts and recorded 147 strikeouts, while walking just 41 batters. Hadley finished her career at UMass fifth all-time with 57 victories and was sixth with 376 career strikeouts and 91 career appearances. Her 0.69 ERA this season ranked fourth on the UMass single-season chart. She also leaves with numerous accolades and honors, including 2002 first team All-Region, 2002 Verizon Academic All-Region and 2001 Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year.
UMass concluded the season with a school record 53 victories and 13 losses, including a 33-game win streak. The Minutewomen captured their eighth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship crown and made their 12th appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
