Greg Cannella Repeats as ECAC Lacrosse Coach of the Year

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts head coach Greg Cannella was named ECAC Lacrosse Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, and freshman attack Gene Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) earned co-Rookie of the Year honors it was announced today by the ECAC office. In addition, five Minutemen were named All-ECAC first team and two were named to the second team.
Cannella led the Minutemen to the outright ECAC title with a perfect 5-0 league record, including a 16-13 victory over previously undefeated Georgetown on April 20, in Washington, D.C. The Minutemen and Hoyas were co-champions last season, and the Hoyas were outright champions in the innagural ECAC season in 2000. The Minutemen are the eighth-seed in the NCAA Tournament, which begins this Saturday at Brown University in Providence, R.I. Cannella is in his eighth season at the helm of the program and has a 63-43 (.594) career record. The Minutemen finished the regular season with an 11-3 overall record. Massachusetts has the nation's second highest scoring offense heading into the NCAA Tournament, averaging 14.07 goals per game.
Tundo was named co-Rookie of the Year along with Penn State midfielder Will Jones. Tundo finished the regular season with a team-high 20 assists. He also has eight goals and is fifth on the team with 28 points. Tundo was twice named ECAC Rookie of the Week this season.
The five Minutemen named first team All-ECAC are junior midfielder Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.), junior midfielder Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.), senior defenseman Matt McFarland (Garden City, N.Y.), senior attackman Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.) and senior attackman Dan Paccione (Amityville, N.Y.). The two second team selections were senior midfielder Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and junior defenseman Tom Fallon (Shaker Heights, Ohio).
Fiore is fourth on the team in points (39), goals (29) and tied for fourth in assists (11). Leveille is second on the team in points (43), and tied for second in goals (31) and assists (12). McFarland leads the team in ground balls with 94 and has scored four goals and three assists as a defender. Morley leads the team in points (47), goals (35) and is tied for second in assists (12). Paccione is tied for second on the team in goals (31), is third in points (42) and is tied for fourth in assists (11). He also leads the team in faceoff winning percentage (.552).
The Minutemen, ranked seventh nationally in the latest poll, face Fairfield in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 3:00 p.m. this Saturday at Brown Stadium in Providence, R.I. It will mark the 14th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance for Massachusetts, and first since advancing to the quarterfinals in 1997.
