SATURDAY'S GAME WITH UMBC
Massachusetts enters the game at 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECAC, while UMBC enters the game with a 3-3 overall record and a 2-2 ECAC record. This is just the third all-time meeting between the two ECAC schools. The road team has won both previous meetings, with the Minutemen winning, 16-10, last season in Baltimore. The Retrievers won, 9-8, in overtime the previous season in Amherst. Current seniors Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.) combined for nine goals and two assists in the victory over UMBC last season.
SCOUTING THE UMBC RETRIEVERS
UMBC is coming off back-to-back ECAC victories over Penn State (9-8) and Rutgers (10-6). The Retrievers opened the season with an 11-4 loss against Navy, followed by a 7-5 victory over Mt. St. Mary's. UMBC then dropped road games to Cornell (16-4) and Georgetown (18-10). The Retrievers are led offensively by attackman Josh Gerber (7g, 3a), attackman Gavin Stringer (6g, 2a), midfielder Adam Shiley (7g, 1a), attackman Jon Harasym (4g, 4a) and midfielder Joey Kestermann (6g, 2a). The defense is anchored by the goaltending of Tim Flanagan, who has a 10.18 goals against average and a .570 save percentage. UMBC has scored on four of 30 extra-man opportunities this season. Midfeidler Pat Muston has taken most of the faceoffs and has won 34 of 60.
THE FIRST 100 GAMES
Saturday's game at Penn State marked the 100th game of Greg Cannella's tenure as head coach of Massachusetts. Since taking over the program in the fall of 1994, he has led the Minutemen to two NCAA Tournaments and two New England championships. Cannella was named the 2001 ECAC and New England Coach of the Year. He has an impressive 59-41 (.590) career record entering this weekend's game with UMBC. Cannella played for the legendary Dick Garber at Massachusetts and graduated in 1988.
THE LAST MINUTE(MEN)
The Minutemen have won three games this season with goals in the last minute of play. Senior Dan Paccione (Amityville, N.Y.) scored with 52 seconds left to defeat Stony Brook, 8-7, on March 2. Junior Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) scored with 49 second left to complete a four-goal come-from-behind win over Brown on March 16. Leveille did it again against Penn State this past Saturday, when he scored the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
CHRIS FIORE SETS NEW CAREER-HIGH
Junior midfielder Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) scored a career-high five goals to lead Massachusetts to the come-from-behind victory over No. 18 Penn State. Fiore scored his fifth goal of the game with just 49 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score 12-12. Fiore is tied for second on the team with 17 goals.
THE LAST TIME OUT FOR MASSACHUSETTS
Junior Kevin Leveille scored the game-winning goal with 30 seconds remaining in regulation as No. 11 Massachusetts defeated No. 18 Penn State, 13-12. On the ensuing faceoff, senior Dan Paccione controlled the ball and the Minutemen were able to run out the clock. Junior Chris Fiore led the team as he scored a career-high five goals. The Nittany Lions took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Minutemen scored the last three goals of the stanza to even the score. Fiore got the Minutemen on the board at the 6:01 mark followed by goals from sophomore Neil Lundburg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and senior Don Little. Penn State scored the five of the first six goals in the second quarter to take an 8-4 lead. Fiore gave the Minutemen some momentum heading into the locker room as he recorded his second goal of the game with just one second remaining in the half. In the third quarter, Fiore brought the Minutemen within two goals at 8-6 with a goal at the 5:15 mark. After a Nittany Lion score less than two minutes later, Paccione brought Massachusetts back within two goals with an unassisted tally at the 2:59 mark. Penn State scored first in the fourth quarter, but the Minutemen recorded three consecutive goals to tie the game 10-10. Paccione, Fiore and sophomore Jeff Zywicki (Nepean, Ontario) each scored. Penn State took a quick 11-10 advantage at the 5:52 mark, but senior Marc Morley scored his second goal of the game to tie it up again. The Nittany Lions controlled the ensuing draw and marched down the field for a goal just 10 seconds after Morley tied it. Penn State held onto its slim 12-11 lead until Fiore scored his fifth goal of the game with just 49 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score. Leveille scored the game-winner 19 seconds later to give the Minutemen their first lead of the game. Freshman Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the cage for the Minutemen in winning his third consecutive game since taking over the starting role.
IN CASE YOU DID NOT KNOW . . .
Chris Fiore was named ECAC Offensive Player of the Week for his five-goal performance at Penn State this past Saturday. He was also honored as the WHMP/UMass Athlete of the Week. It is the second consecutive week a lacrosse player won the award, as Dan Paccione was honored the previous week... The Minutemen have won seven straight since dropping the season-opener to Hofstra in overtime... All-American Kevin Leveille enters the weeked with a 10-game goal scoring streak. He has netted at least one goal in 19 of the last 20 games... Bill Schell has been impressive since taking over the starting goaltending duties for the Albany game on March 20. He has made three consecutive starts and has a 7.50 goals against average and a .607 save percentage. He made 12 saves in each of the past two victories.
