TODAY'S GAME WITH THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY
Massachusetts enters the game with a 1-1 overall record, while Navy enters the game with a 2-1 overall record and a 1-0 ECAC record. This is the first league game of the season for the Minutemen. This is the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools with Navy holding a 2-1 record in the series. However, the Minutemen won last season's meeting, 11-8, at Richard F. Garber Field in Amherst. Marc Morley (Canton, Mass.) and Dan Paccione (Amityville, N.Y.) each had three goals in the victory. Navy defeated Massachusetts, 6-3, in a game played at Rutgers during the 2000 season in the only other ECAC meeting between the two schools. The first meeting took place in Annapolis during the NCAA Tournament in 1979. The Midshipmen won the game, 16-14.
SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN
Navy is coming off an 11-10 six overtime loss to then No. 13 North Carolina last Saturday. The Midshipmen opened the season with victories over St. Joseph's (16-2) and UMBC (11-4) before falling to the Tar Heels. Navy is anchored by the goaltending of All-American Jon Higdon who has a 5.26 goals against average and a .696 save percentage. The offense is led by Dave Pittard (8g, 8a), Eddie McKinnon (7g, 4a), Ben Bailey (4g, 4a), Joe Bossi (4g, 1a) and Eddy Holton (4g, 1a). The faceoff duties are split between Chris Dingman (16-of-31) and Michael Schaal (14-of-26). Navy has scored on five-of-20 extra-man opportunities, while holding opponents to three-of-15 on their EMOs.
MARC MORLEY HELPING OTHERS
Senior attackman Marc Morley has a goal and six assists through two games. He had three assists in the opener against Hofstra and then followed it up with a goal and three assists against Stony Brook. Last season Morley was second on the team in goals with 29, but had just eight assists in 14 games.
HATS OFF TO ...
Senior attackman Dan Paccione and junior midfielder Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) each recorded hat tricks in the season-opener against Hofstra. It marked the fourth consecutive game that at least two Minutemen had recorded three goals a piece. Massachusetts ended the 2001 season with multiple players recording hat tricks against Syracuse, Rutgers and Brown.
ENJOYING THE THIRD QUARTER
Massachusetts has outscored its opponents 7-1 in the third quarter this season. Last weekend, the Minutemen used a big third quarter, outscoring Stony Brook 5-0, to comeback and take the lead from the Seawolves. Massachusetts also began its comeback against Hofstra with a 2-1 edge in the third quarter. Last season, the Minutemen held a decisive edge in scoring in all four quarters, including a 54-35 edge in the third.
ZYWICKI: TWO FOR TWO
Sophomore Jeff Zywicki (Nepean, Ontario) has scored a pair of goals in each of the two games this season. He opened the season with two goals and an assist against Hofstra, and then followed it up with two goals in the victory over Stony Brook. Zywicki played in seven games last season and had a goal and two assists. The Ontario native grew up playing box lacrosse and spent much of last season adjusting to the field game.
PACCIONE NETS GAME-WINNER LATE
Senior Dan Paccione scored the game-winning goal with 52 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Massachusetts to an 8-7 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday, March 2. After a slow start, the Minutemen found themselves down, 3-1 at the half, but used a big third quarter to take the lead. Jeff Zywicki scored both his goals during the 5-0 third quarter run, and seniors Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Dusty Smith (West Chester, Pa.) and Marc Morley scored the other three goals. Stony Brook then countered with four straight goals to open the fourth quarter and take a 7-6 lead with 6:06 remaining. All-American midfielder Kevin Leveille tied the game off a feed from Morley with 5:41 remaining before Paccione scored the game-winner with less than a minute left in regualtion time. Senior goaltender Rob Schneider (Huntington Station, N.Y.) made 14 saves in the cage for the Minutemen.

Last season Massachusetts finished in the top 10 in every team statistic the NCAA keeps. The Minutemen led the nation in man-down defense (.863) and scoring margin (7.14), finished second in scoring offense (14.86), third in faceoff winning percentage (.624), fourth in man-up offense (.404), fourth in winning percentage (.857) and sixth in scoring defense (7.71) ... Massachusetts is well represented in professional lacrosse. There are nine former Minutemen either playing or coaching in Major League Lacrosse: Gerry Byrne (Boston Cannons), Tom Carmean (Bridgeport Barrage), Harold Drumm (Bridgeport Barrage), Scott Hiller (Boston Cannons head coach), Dennis Kelly (Bridgeport Barrage), Sal LoCascio (Bridgeport Barrage head coach), Mario Lopez (Bridgeport Barrage), Mark Millon (Baltimore Bayhawks), Tim Soudan (Rochester Rattlers). There are four former Minutemen either playing or coaching in the National Lacrosse League: Sal LoCascio (N.Y. Saints head coach), John Madigan (Albany Attack), Mark Millon (Philadelphia Wings), Tim Soudan (Rochester Knighthawks) ... The Minutemen have the seventh best winning percentage in Division I NCAA lacrosse history. Massachusetts is 392-202-3 (.658) all-time. The Minutemen have advanced to 13 NCAA Tournaments, which ranks eighth all-time.
