WEDNESDAY'S GAME WITH VERMONT
Massachusetts enters the game with a 2-1 overall record, while Vermont enters the game with a 1-1 overall record. This is the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools with Massachusetts holding a 5-0 record in the series. The Minutemen defeated the Catamounts, 18-6, last season with 10 different UMass players scoring goals, including three by current senior Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.). Current junior Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists, and Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
Vermont is coming off a 6-4 victory over Lafayette on Saturday at New Canaan, Conn. The Catamounts opened the season with a 13-3 loss to Hobart. The offense is led by Mark Prior (4g, 0a), R.J. Harrison (3g, 0a), Doug Moses (0g, 3a) and Ryan Herchenroether (0g, 2a). The defense is anchored by the goaltending of Ed Burns and Michael Gabel. Each has played one game. Burns started against Hobart and made 11 saves while allowing 13 goals. Gabel got the call in the cage against Lafayette and picked up the victory by making 13 saves and allowing just four goals. Dave Hudacsko has taken all but four of the Catamounts faceoffs. He has won 18 of 30. Vermont has scored on four of 16 extra-man advantages, while opponents have scored on three of eight EMOs. The Catamounts have been outshot 66-52 on the season.
MARC MORLEY HELPING OTHERS
Senior attackman Marc Morley has three goals and a team-high nine assists through three games. Morley had five points on two goals and three assists in the 13-10 victory over Navy this past Saturday. He had three assists in the season-opener against Hofstra and then followed it up with a goal and three assists against Stony Brook. Last season Morley was second on the team in goals with 29, but had just eight assists in 14 games.
PACCIONE AND TUNDO HONORED BY ECAC
Massachusetts senior attackman Dan Paccione (Amittyville, N.Y.) and freshman attackman Gene Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) earned weekly honors from the ECAC Lacrosse League. Paccione tied a career-high with four goals in the Minutemen's 13-10 victory over No. 12 Navy this past Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Paccione had the first two goals of the game to give Massachusetts a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. He netted his third goal of the game during a 7-0 Minuteman run in the second quarter. Paccione capped off the day by scoring the final goal of the game with 5:11 remaining to secure the victory. He also won eight of 15 faceoffs during the game. Tundo had a career-high four points on a goal and three assists in game against Navy. He netted his second goal of the season and had an assist in the second quarter. He added assists on back-to-back Minuteman goals in the third quarter.
MINUTEMEN EARN ROAD VICTORY OVER NAVY, 13-10
Senior Dan Paccione scored four goals and junior Kevin Leveille had three goals and two assists as Massachusetts defeated No. 12 Navy, 13-10, this past Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Massachusetts jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first quarter thanks to a pair of goals from Paccione. Navy tied the game, 2-2, less than two minutes into the second quarter, but the Minutemen then exploded for seven unanswered goals to take a 9-2 lead at the half. Junior Chris Fiore began the Minuteman run with a goal off a feed from senior Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.). Senior Marc Morley scored next followed by Paccione's third of the game. Morley scored again to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Minutemen before freshman Gene Tundo scored his second goal of the season. Leveille finished off the half with a pair of goals, one coming with Massachusetts on an extra-man advantage and the other coming with the Minutemen down a man. Following a pair of Navy goals to open the third quarter, Leveille netted his third of the game off a feed from Tundo. Senior Dusty Smith (West Chester, Pa.) made the score, 11-4, with a goal assisted by Tundo. Navy cut the Minuteman lead to 11-8 with four straight goals to end the third quarter. Massachusetts responded with a goal from sophomore Jeff Zywicki (Nepean, Ontario) off a feed from Smith. Navy cut the Minuteman lead to 12-10 before Paccione netted his fourth of the game off a feed from Leveille with 5:11 remaining in the game. Senior goaltender Rob Schneider (Huntington Station, N.Y.) made five saves in the cage for Massachusetts, while Jon Higdon made 11 saves for Navy.
HATS OFF TO ...
Senior attackman Dan Paccione and junior midfielder Kevin Leveille both recorded hat tricks in the season-opener against Hofstra, and then each did it again this past Saturday in the victory over No. 12 Navy. Paccione tied a career-high with four goals against the Mids, while Leveille had two assists to go along with his three goals. Leveille has scored at least one goal in 21 of the past 23 Massachusetts games.

Last season Massachusetts finished in the top 10 in every team statistic the NCAA keeps. The Minutemen led the nation in man-down defense (.863) and scoring margin (7.14), finished second in scoring offense (14.86), third in faceoff winning percentage (.624), fourth in man-up offense (.404), fourth in winning percentage (.857) and sixth in scoring defense (7.71) ... Head coach Greg Cannella enters the game with a 54-41 (.568) record. He is in his eighth season at the helm of the Massachusetts program. Cannella graduated from UMass in the sping of 1988.
